YOUTH : FEEL THE COFFEE
The Kenyan youth involvement in agriculture has been on a steady decline in the last few decades. Coffee farming sits around the top of the list of the most affected farm products. The combined factors of old guards being reluctant to pass on knowledge and a coffee ecosystem that limits direct contact between the coffee farmers and their buyers has resulted in the Kenyan youth being reluctant to invest their youth years in the coffee farming business.
Coffee Morans is inspired and owned by youth committing to over fifty percent direct sourcing from young Kenyan farmers and farmers that have recruited young farmers at senior levels. In the expansive speciality coffee value chain, we have introduced bi-annual programmes aimed at giving our young farmers an overview of the retail and export end of speciality coffee.
Coffee Morans is using the platform and diverse backgrounds of the directors to positively influence our young farmers on the endless possibilities of coffee trade. With globally certified qualifications in Q grading, previous work experience within the top speciality coffee retailers and exporters, over 15 containers exported to Europe, Middle East and Asia, and over 10 years international marketing experience as achieved milestones by the individual directors, Coffee Morans’ aim is to funnel the knowledge to other young farmers on key areas to contribute in the coffee value chain and continue making a decent living.
This support is reinforced by ourselves being a link between likeminded exporters and the youth in the coffee belt of Kenya. Our cupping sessions with the youth have emphasized to them on the importance of best farm practices from the nursery to the processed green coffee beans. A better quality of green and roasted beans translates to a higher income to the farmer per kilogram and once the young farmers join us in cupping and export corresponding, they appreciate more the value of best farm practices.
